    TANZANIA'S PRESIDENT JULIUS NYERERE SAID IN DAR ES SALAAM YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) THAT THE UNION OF THE REPUBLIC WAS FIRMLY CEMENTED AND WOULD REMAIN CEMENTED FOREVER. HE WAS SPEAKING TO NEWSMEN AT CELEBRATIONS TO MARK THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE REPUBLIC.

    ABOUT 10,000 PEOPLE GATHERED AT THE NATIONAL STADIUM IN DAR ES SALAAM TO REVIEW A BIG MILITARY PARADE. GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS MINGLED WITH THE GENERAL PUBLIC TO WATCH THE DISPLAY. PRESIDENT NYERERE ARRIVED A SHORT WHILE BEFORE THE PARADE TO TAKE THE OFFICIAL SALUTE.

    THE FIRST VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC, SHEIKH ABEID KARUME, WAS ALSO AT THE CELEBRATIONS. A MASSIVE PROCESSION WHICH WAS TO HAVE HERALDED THE PARADE INTO THE STADIUM HAD TO BE CANCELLED BECAUSE OF HEAVY RAIN.
