    There has been a right-wing demonstration in Frankfurt, West Germany, to commemorate anti-communist disturbances in East Germany 24 years ago. Left-wing demonstrators staged a counter-protest,but there were no violent incidents reported.

    SYNOPSIS: According to a police count, some 3,000 members of the National Democratic Party, the NPD, took past in the march to the Frankfurt Town Hall on Friday (17 June). They were commemorating the 1953 disturbances in East Germany in which several people lost their lives.

    Although they gave the NPD permission for the march, the police were taking no chances as many of the demonstrators demanded the release of Nazi war criminal Rudolph Hess from Spandau prison. Hess, once Hitler's deputy, was sentenced to life imprisonment at the Nuremberg war crimes trials in 1964. Now 83, he has been the sole inmate of Berlin's Spandau prison for the last 11 years.

    As the demonstrators waved the flags of the old ??? Reich, attempts were made by a left-wing group to disturb the march. But the police were out in sufficient numbers to prevent trouble.
