  • Description

Thirty people were arrested and at least twelve hurt when police clashed with about a thousand demonstrators in the Greek capital Athens, on Sunday (November 4th). The demonstrators had been attending a memorial service on the fifth anniversary of the death of former Prime Minister, George Papandreou.

The memorial service drew a crowd of about 5,000 people. They included many members of parliament and the Centre Union Party, which Mr. Papandreou led for many years. Mr. George Marvos, the present leader of the party, and Mr. Panayotis Kanellopolous, leader of the National Radical Union Party, were both at the service. Afterwards both men, who spearhead the opposition to the present government, condemned the police action. The trouble started when a group chanting anti-government slogans tried to march to Constitution Square in the city centre after the service. Police blocked their way and fighting started.

The new government of Mr. Spyros Markezinis, which was sworn in early in October, has promised 'irreproachable' elections in 1974. But, according to Reuters news agency, the opposition parties are expected to co-operate in boycotting the elections.
