Background: INTRODUCTION: The doubt about England's ability to qualify for the World Cup Tournament in Spain next year remains. They dropped their first home point in the qualifying group when they were held to a goalless draw by Romania at Wembley on Wednesday (29 April). England still head the European Group Four with five points from four matches. But three of their remaining four qualifying ties are away from home. Romania have four points from three games. Although Switzerland and Norway may be discounted Hungary will still be hopeful of reaching the finals.
SYNOPSIS: Whatever the permutations, the pressure is now on England's manager Ron Greenwood. England in dark shirts, playing from left to right, mounted several dangerous attacks which fizzled out in the penalty area. Romania had chances of a breakaway as England pushed forward but Peter Shilton in goal had not trouble with shots like this.
The speed and persistence of Steve Coppell caused the visitors problems. The forward beat Stefanescu, passed to Trevor Frances but Iordache, who was having a fine game, caught the ball virtually off Tony Woodcock's head.
As the game progressed Iordache and the rest of the Romanian midfield moved up and began to cramp England's movements. The old faults began to appear. England were reduced to hopeful long shots like this one from Coppell.
Romania nearly scored a free goal ten minutes before half-time. Shilton slipped as he ran backwards to catch Balaci's header and just scooped the ball way.
England produced a stream of corners but with no result. Russell Osman nearly scored from Trevor Brooking's cross but his shot flew just past the upright. At half-time England were frustrated and Romania's confidence was growing.
England's best chance fell to Francis. A bad back pass left him free but he hesitated and hit a defender on the leg.
