  • Description

CALM RETURNED TO GOA, DECEMBER 21, AS INDIAN MILITARY FORCES AND POLICE TOOK CONTROL AND MOVES WERE BEGUN TO INTEGRATE THE FORMER PORTUGUESE COLONY INTO THE INDIAN UNION.

AT THE PORT OF MARMAGAO, ONE OF THE MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THE INVADERS, A SUNKEN TRAWLER AND A NUMBER OF MOORED INDIAN WARSHIPS WERE THE ONLY EVIDENCE OF THE SKIRMISHES WHICH TOOK PLACE NEARBY IN THE TWO DAYS OF FIGHTING.

IT WAS OFF THE COAST NEAR MARMAGAO THAT A PORTUGUESE FRIGATE, "ALFONSO DE ALBUQUERQUE", BECAME ENGAGED IN A 45-MINUTE GUNFIGHT WITH AN INDIAN CRUISER AND DESTROYER. THE FRIGATE WAS EVENTUALLY BEACHED BY HER CREW.

AS CRANES, RAILYARDS AND COAL BUNKERS REMAINED IDLE, THE ONLY LIFE IN THE HARBOUR WAS THE MOVEMENT OF PARTIES OF INDIAN SAILORS. WHILE THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT IS DECIDING THE TERRITORY'S FUTURE, MARTIAL LAW HAS BEEN DECLARED FOR AN INDEFINITE TIME.
