THE 1965 MONTE CARLO RALLY IS UNDER WAY. THIRTY-TWO CARS SET OUT FROM NEAR STOCKHOLM?

  • Description

THE 1965 MONTE CARLO RALLY IS UNDER WAY. THIRTY-TWO CARS SET OUT FROM NEAR STOCKHOLM THIS EVENING (FRIDAY) TO START THE RALLY. CARS FROM EIGHT OTHER EUROPEAN STARTING POINTS WILL BE FLAGGED AWAY TOMORROW FOR THE LONG TRIP TO THE MEDITERRANEAN PRINCIPALITY.

SEVEN OF THE SCHEDULED STARTERS FROM SWEDEN DROPPED OUT BEFORE THE START, INCLUDING ONE WHICH FAILED A PRE-START CHECK. SWEDISH ROADS ARE REPORTED DRY AND FREE OF ICE. HOWEVER, ICE AND SNOW ARE REPORTED ALONG THE ROUTE.

PADDY HOPKIRK SAID JUST BEFORE SETTING OUT ON THE 2,500-MILE (4,000-KM) TRIP THAT HE WAS HOPING THERE WOULD BE A LOT OF SNOW, OTHERWISE "OUR CHANCES WILL NOT BE SO GOOD." ERIK CARLSSON ALSO WANTED PLENTY OF SNOW -- OTHERWISE, HE SAID, "WE WILL NOT GET FAR."
THE RALLY -- IT IS THE 34TH -- PROMISES TO BE THE TOUGHEST-EVER. ALL OF THE 250 SCHEDULED STARTERS ARE DUE TO REACH MONTE CARLO ON TUESDAY.
