  • Description

President Makarios of Cyprus told a press conference in Nicosia on Wednesday (27 May) that the illegal National Front organisation was responsible for last Saturday's shock commando raid on Limassol police headquarters. The National Front organisation is dedicated to uniting Cyprus with Greece.

The President said the Sacred Legion branch of the organisation carried out the raid and that the banned National Front was responsible for a series of terrorist acts on Cyprus in the past 12 months.

Eight men were detained on Wednesday in connection with the commando raid, bringing the total in custody to 56 -- including eight policemen and two national guardsmen. Masked raiders had grabbed 150 weapons, including machine guns, in Saturday's incident.

The President added that a Greek Cypriot leader had been arrested this week carrying a plan for nationwide disturbances. President Makarios said that lawlessness would be "pitilessly combated."
