  • Description

Rescuers were still searching on Thursday (4 May) for the fifty miners still trapped by thick smoke in the maze of tunnels forming the Sunshine Silver Mine in Kellogg, northern Idaho.

The fire broke out at the top of a hoist-shaft on Tuesday (2 May) morning, and immediately smoke filled the only two escape-routes for the 82 miners at the shaft's lowest level a mile (1600 m) below ground. 108 other miners working at higher levels managed to escape.

Late yesterday evening eight bodies, including those of a father and son, were seen--but could not be brought up to the surface.

N.B.C. reporter Don Oliver was present at the scene, and the film is accompanied by his commentary throughout. An alternative commentary is provided overleaf, but if you wish to use the U.S. commentary, a sound transcript is available below.
