    THE INDONESIAN FOREIGN MINISTER, MR ADAM MALIK, FLEW FROM DJAKARTA TO WEST IRIAN YESTERDAY (13 JULY) TO OBSERVE THE ACT OF FREE CHOICE WHICH BEGINS TODAY (14 JULY). HE WAS ACCOMPANIED BY THE AMBASSADORS TO INDONESIA FROM AUSTRALIA, MR GORDON JOCKEL, HOLLAND, MR HUGO SCHELTEME, AND THAILAND, MR LUANG P. ACKSON.

    THEY FLEW BY CONVAIR JET TO BIAK ISLAND WHERE THEY WERE DUE TO SWITCH TO A SMALLER AIRCRAFT AND FLY TO THE TINY TOWN OF MERAUKE, IN THE SOUTH-EAST CORNER OF WEST IRIAN NEAR THE BORDER OF THE AUSTRALIAN-ADMINISTERED PAPUA NEW GUINEA. MERAUKE IS WHERE THE ACT BEGINS.

    ABOARD THE SAME FLIGHT WERE 50 WEST IRIAN TROOPS WHO FOUGHT AGAINST THE DUTCH IN SUPPORT OF INDONESIAN RULE. THEY WILL BE USED FOR DEFENCE DUTY DURING THE THREE-WEEK REFERENDUM WHICH WILL DECIDE WHETHER THE TERRITORY IS TO REMAIN PART OF INDONESIA.
