  • Description

WITH MOST OF EUROPE STILL SHIVERING IN THE COLDEST WINTER FOR YEARS, CROWDS OF PEOPLE AT THE HAMBURG BOAT SHOW, WHICH OPENED YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) ARE HAVING A GLIMPSE OF THE WARM SUMMER DAYS BEFORE THEM.

FIFTEEN NATIONS ARE REPRESENTED AT THE HAMBURG SHOW, INCLUDING HOLLAND, SWEDEN, BRITAIN, BELGIUM, FRANCE AND THE UNITED STATES.

THIS YEAR FOR THE FIRST TIME, MORE THAN HALF THE BOATS ON DISPLAY ARE MADE OF PLASTICS, SUCH AS FIBRE GLASS, INSTEAD OF THE TRADITIONAL WOOD CONSTRUCTION. BRITISH AND AMERICAN BOAT BUILDERS, PARTICULARLY, ARE SUING PLASTICS. HOWEVER, SWEDISH AND GERMAN FIRMS STILL RELY MAINLY ON WOOD.

ONE INNOVATION THIS YEAR IS AN ELECTRIC OUTBOARD MOTOR WHICH RUNS ON A 12-VOLT CAR BATTERY. THE MOTOR RUNS FOR ABOUT EIGHT HOURS ON A FULLY CHARGED BATTERY.

ANOTHER INNOVATION IS A WATER SKI DEVICE KNOWN AS THE SKI CRAFT. IT IS HULL, ENCLOSING A 24-HORSEPOWER ENGINE, WHICH CAN PULL A SKIER ALONG AT A FAST 28 MILES AN HOUR AND IS OPERATED BY A SKIER IN MUCH THE SAME WAY AND WIDTH THE SAME CONTROLS AS A POWER LAWN MOWER.
