  • Description

THE RIGHTIST JUSTICE PARTY YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) WON AN OVERWHELMING MAJORITY IN TURKEY'S GENERAL ELECTIONS. IT APPEARS THAT THE PARTY - A CONTINUATION OF THE DISSOLVED DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF ADNAN MENDERES - WON ABOUT 257 SEATS IN THE 450 SEAT NATIONAL ASSEMBLY.

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN NEARLY FIVE YEARS IT SEEMS THAT ONE POLITICAL PARTY HAS SUFFICIENT SEATS TO FORM A GOVERNMENT ON ITS WON. ON OF THE MAJOR PARTNERS IN THE LAST COALITION GOVERNMENT, THE REPUBLICAN PEOPLE'S PARTY, WON ONLY 140 SEATS COMPARED WITH 190 IN 1961.

ADNAN MENDERES' DEMOCRATIC PARTY WAS DISSOLVED AFTER THE 1960 ARMY COUP FOLLOWING WHICH MENDERES WAS EXECUTED. HIS SON, YKSEL MENDERES, WAS ONE OF THE SUCCESSFUL JUSTICE PARTY CANDIDATES IN YESTERDAY'S ELECTION. THE PROGRAMME OF THE PARTY, FOUNDED IN 1961, STRESSES PRIVATE ENTERPRISE AND EXPANDED SOCIAL WELFARE AND HAS A STRONG RELIGIOUS (MOSLEM) BIAS.

THE ELECTION RESULTS BRING TO THE FORE MANY OF MR. MENDERES' SUPPORTERS. IN ADDITION TO HIS SON, THE DAUGHTER OF FORMER PRESIDENT CELAL BAYAR, NILUFER GERSOY, WAS ALSO ELECTED.
