Background: Thousands of Indians held a mass rally in Calcutta on Saturday (7 June) to demonstrate their support for the ruling Congress Party and the Government of Mrs. Indira Gandhi.
The demonstration was organised in response to Tuesday's mass protest march led by opposition political parties to condemn the present Government as "undemocratic" and to accuse it of having "ceased all civic rights".
Large processions of professional people (such as doctors and lawyers) and students, arrived in groups from various parts of West Bengal to join the rally in Calcutta.
The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mr. Siddhartha Sankar Ray, addressed the crowd and later said he felt the rally had succeeded in making its point... showing the popularity of the Government.
