  • Description

On a meet-to-people tour, Hugh Gaitskell, British Socialist leader, visited, Scotland, October 13.

He was particularly interested in the Fish Market, inspected the fish dock and watched in progress.

And to make quite sure be got to know the people who handle the fish, he had breakfast with the fish porters.

Political reporters note that the Gaitskell tour follows closely on that of Premier Harold MacMillan whose personal popularity soared to new heights after a recent meet-the-people of Britain.

Launching in factory canteens, chatting with workers, and stumbling across ploughed fields to watch a ploughing competition, the Premier wound up his tour at the Conservative Party Conference in blackpool - leaving behind a cloud of speculation about the possibility of a general election in the near future.
