  • Description

What has been described as the "World's biggest stamp auction" is to be held on Thursday (1 May) in Geneva, Switzerland.

The two-day auction is being staged by two London-base auctioneers and one estimate puts the total sale value at over 500,000 pounds sterling (1,200,000 US dollars).

Highlights of the sale include the famous and unique mint block of four Mauritius one penny "post paid" stamps of 1848. These are likely to fetch over 60,000 pounds sterling (144,000 US dollars).

Potentially the most valuable item is a British Guiana cover bearing a pair of 1850 two cent rose stamps, known as "cotton reels". Only ten copies of this stamp are known. When last sold in London five years ago these two fetched 75,000 pounds sterling (180,000 US dollars).
