  • Description

DISCUSSIONS BETWEEN THE KURDISH REBELS AND THE NEW GOVERNMENT OF IRAQ HAVE BEEN INTERRUPTED BECAUSE AN IRAQ GOVERNMENT DELEGATION HAS HAD TO LEAVE FOR A VISIT TO CAIRO YESTERDAY (THURSDAY).

THE KURDS HAVE BEEN IN REVOLT FOR THE PAST 18 MONTHS IN AN EFFORT TO SECURE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A SEPARATE KURDISH STATE IN THE NORTHERN PART OF IRAQ. IT WAS THEIR SUPPORT WHICH HELPED IN THE OVERTHROW OF THE PREVIOUS PRIME MINISTER, GENERAL KASSEM, EARLIER THIS MONTH.

THEY HAVE SINCE CALLED A CEASE FIRE WHILE THEY HAVE TALKS WITH THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NEW GOVERNMENT. REPORTS FROM BAGHDAD SAY THAT THE TALKS SO FAR HAVE BEEN TAKING PLACE IN A SPIRIT OF GOODWILL.

INCLUDED IN THE GROUP VISITING THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC IS JALAL TALABANI, LEADER OF THE KURDISH MISSION TO BAGHDAD AND ONE OF THE TOP PARTISAN COMMANDERS.

BEFORE HE LEFT BAGHDAD FOR CAIRO, A REPORTER QUESTIONED HIM ABOUT THE NEGOTIATIONS GOING ON WITH THE IRAQI GOVERNMENT.

A REPORTER ALSO SPOKE TO PRESIDENT ABDUL AREF, WHO NOW HEADS THE IRAQI GOVERNMENT FOLLOWING THE FALL OF GENERAL KASSEM. HE WAS ASKED ABOUT PROPOSALS FOR ARAB UNITY.
