  • Description

In Niger, one of the Sahelian countries most tragically hit by drought during recent years, the entire population was called to pray for rain on Sunday (6 July).

The example was set by the head of state, Lt.-Col. Seyni Kountche, who joined with other members of the government praying in the capital, Niamey, for an abundant rainy season.

An extensive international relief effort has substantially ended the terrible famine in Niger, which followed in the wake ??? years of drought. And last year's rainy season brought hopes ??? a good harvest.

But it has been reported that for years to come, even with continuing good harvests, the country will need help in feeding its population of over four million people -- and in overcoming the long-term effects of drought.
