    THE COMPETITION, WHICH FOLLOWED THE WEEK-LONG WORLD WEIGHTLIFTING CHAMPIONSHIPS, WAS DIVIDED INTO TWO SECTIONS: FOR MEN UNDER FIVE FEET SIX INCHES (1.68 METRES) TALL AND THE OTHER FOR MEN OVER FIVE FEET SIX INCHES.

    RUDY WARD OF BRITAIN, WHO WAS BORN IN BARBADOS, WON THE EUROPEAN TITLE IN THE CLASS FOR SHORTER MEN.
