  • Description

SENATOR HUBERT HUMPHREY, THE FORMER VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, IS SERIOUSLY ILL WITH CANCER. HE HAD AN OPERATION YESTERDAY (18TH AUGUST)-HIS SECOND IN A YEAR -- AND THE SURGEONS FOUND A TUMOUR THAT THEY CANNOT REMOVE. BUT THEY SAY THAT THE SENATOR, WHO IS 66 MIGHT LIVE FOR MONTHS OR EVEN YEARS.

SYNOPSIS: Early in his political career, Hubert Horatio Humphrey was nicknamed "The Happy Warrior". His enthusiasm for campaigning rarely faltered.

He became Mayor of Minneapolis in 1945; Senator for Minnesota in 1948; and made his first bid to be Democratic Presidential candidate in 1960. He lost to John Kennedy after running out of funds. Then, in 1964, President Johnson invited him to run with him as Vice-President.

Their term of office was overshadowed by the vietnam war. Vice-President Humphrey, who visited American troops there in December 1966, consistently backed the president's policy.

He was sent to Paris, and other European capitals, to present the American view, and was seen as a dept at mending diplomatic fences.

1968 was the summit of his political career: he won the Democratic nomination for the Presidency...but lost the election to the Republican, Richard Nixon. In two more Presidential elections, he was in the running for the candidacy. Each time, he withdrew when the tide began to turn against him.

HUMPHREY: "I shall not seek it, I shall not compete for it, I shall not search for it, I shall not scrabble for it... but I'll be around."
Senator Humphrey has always had the reputation of a liberal. He has consistently campaigned for civil rights and social legislation. He called himself "moderately left of centre". When he withdrew in 1972, he summed up what he had tried to do in politics.

We've waged a good battle. We've done it with in the rules of the games, and we bow out now with the spirit of friendship and of understanding of a good Democrat, but above all hopefully as good citizens and a good family. Thank you very much."
