  • Description

With two months still to go before local government elections in Portugal, the campaign rallies have already started.

SYNOPSIS: In the first rally, some 5,000 people gathered in the Campo Pequeno bullring in Lisbon to show their support for the United People's Election Front, a merger of the Communist party and the People's Democratic Movement. The two political parties merged just over a week ago to launch what they called a great battle against those who wished to distort the democratic system.

According to its handouts, the Front plans to work for autonomy for all local bodies. It envisages total financial independence for local councils.

Left-wing Professor, Ruy Luis Gomes, Rector of Oporto University, called on the crowd to rally its forces to ensure victory in the elections. He appealed for unity among the Front's supporters so that the elections could be won by men and women capable of protecting the interests of the people.
