World Cup soccer...and Holland got down to business with a vengeance at the start of the second round of the tournament when they defeated Austria 5-1 at Cordoba in Argentina on Wednesday (14 June). Austria's presence in the second round is one of the big surprises of the tournament but football experts say from now on they can expect to be little more than chopping blocks.

SYNOPSIS: Holland playing left to right in the whites shots went on to the attack early and it was Brandts who got the first goal. Austria hit back strongly with several attacks down the left flank. On this occasion the ball is retrieved by krankl and his shot is saved by the Dutch keeper, Schrijvers.

Austria were still in the game at this stage but the Dutch delivered the killer blow with two goals in 60 seconds. The Austrians paid the price for tough tackling when a foul on Jansen was awarded with a penalty and Rensenbrink made no mistake from the spot.

From the kick-off Austria's attack was blocked and the Dutch mounted a counter-attack with the ball being crossed to Rep, who delicately chipped it past the keeper for Holland's third goal.

Austria fought on gamely. On this occasion a difficult shot from Hickersberger is saved by the goalkeeper Schrijvers.

Early in the second half a long Dutch goal kick found their forwards and the ball goes to Rep who made no mistake with the goalmouth unguarded. Critics said Rep was the key to the Dutch win.

Ten minutes from time Austria had their best attack of the game. A good cross over the Dutch goalkeeper's head gave Obermayer the room to hustle the ball into the back of the net.

However it was only a consolation goal for Austria and two minutes later the ever-active Rensenbrink of Holland carved out a simple goal for Willie Van der kerkhof to chip it into the Austrian net. Final score Holland 5, Austria 1.
