  • Description

TRANSCRIPT: QUESTION: "MR GORDON WALKER, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT AMERICAN PRAISE FOR BRITAIN'S FORTHRIGHT REPLY TO RHODESIA'S THREAT TO GO IT ALONE?"

ANSWER: "WELL, I'M VERY PLEASED ABOUT THAT. I DIDN'T DOUBT THAT WOULD BE SO, BUT WHEN I EXPLAINED IT TO MR DEAN RUSK, JUST BEFORE IT WAS PUBLISHED, HE SAID HE WOULD WELCOME IT AND THEY WOULD LINE UP WITH US."

QUESTION: "WHAT ABOUT REACTION IN THE UNITED NATIONS?"

ANSWER: "VERY GOOD. I WAS THERE OF COURSE YESTERDAY, I THINK IT WAS, VERY INDEED. IT MADE A VERY FINE IMPRESSION THERE."

QUESTION: "ON THE QUESTION OF M.L.F. (MULTI-LATERAL FORCE) HAVE YOU RECEIVED A GUARANTEE THAT THE LABOUR GOVERNMENT CAN HAVE UNTIL THE NEW YEAR TO DECIDE?"

ANSWER: "WELL, GUARANTEES ONE DOESN'T HAVE. I THINK WE CAN WORK ON THIS ASSUMPTION. WHAT WE HAVE BROADLY ACCEPTED ON BOTH SIDES IS THAT WE WON'T USE ANY DELAYING TACTICS. WE'LL DO IT AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. BUT FOR A NEW GOVERNMENT IT TAKES SOME TIME. WE HAVEN'T MENTIONED A DATE, THEY HAVEN'T MENTIONED A DATE."

QUESTION: "DID YOU FIND ANY LATEST AMERICAN REACTION TOWARDS THE BRITISH PLAN FOR A MORE BROADLY BASED M.L.F.?"

ANSWER: "WELL YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT PLAN I PUT FORWARD DO YOU? WE HAD VERY INTERESTING DISCUSSIONS BUT THESE ARE ONLY TWO ALLIES OUT OF AN ALLIANCE AND THERE'S NO QUESTION OF ANYTHING HARD AND FAST BEING ARRANGED BETWEEN US AND THE UNITED STATES AND THEN BEING PRESENTED TO THE OTHER ALLIES. IT WAS PRETTY TENTATIVE TALK WE HAD."

QUESTION: "DID YOU FIND AMERICANS PREPARED TO GIVE BRITAIN MORE SUPPORT OVER MALAYSIA, PERHAPS GOING AS FAR AS STOPPING MILITARY AID TO INDONESIA?"

ANSWER: "THERE IS NO MILITARY AID TO INDONESIA FROM THE UNITED STATES. THAT HAS ALREADY STOPPED. THERE IS A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF THE FOOD SUBSIDIES AND SO ON. I WOULDN'T SAY MORE HELP BECAUSE THEY ARE PROBABLY WITH US. BUT WE WENT OVER ALL THAT GROUND AGAIN AND THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE IN OUR VIEWS ABOUT THE NEED TO MAINTAIN AND DEFEND THE INDEPENDENCE OF MALAYSIA, AS LONG AS THEY WANT OUT HELP."

QUESTION: "THANK YOU VERY MUCH MR GORDON WALKER"

    ANSWER: "THANK YOU".
