  • Description

AMERICAN Vice-President Nixon and his wife, on the last day of their four-day whirlwind visit to Britain, sped to Oxford November 28 in a giant chromium-plated fin-tipped Cadillac with flags fluttering to see one of the most ancient and beautiful of English cities.

They motored down its High Street, known the world over as The High, and passed by some of the city's 28 colleges, some of which date from the fifteenth century.

They went to one of the most beautiful of the colleges: Magdalen, and saw its chapel tower. They visited Rhodes Houses, named after Cecil Rhodes, the British colonial administrator of the last century who left the bulk of his fortune for the founding of scholarships at Oxford.

He was to have addressed the undergraduates - some of them from the United States - in Rhodes House. Instead he invited questions. They came thick and fast, ranged from the Republican versus Democrat hassle and foreign appropriations.

He lunched with university dignitaries, then met more undergraduates gathered with hands in pockets and scarves wound round the neck.
