  • Description

The Chairman of Ethiopia's new Provisional Military Council, General Aman Andom, announced at his first international news conference on Friday (20 September) that former Government ministers and officials, now under detention, will be tried by a general court martial.

The 51 year-old General, sidestepped questions about what the Council intended to do with former Emperor, Haile Selassie, who was deposed by the military officers on 12 September. All he would say was that it was up to the people of Ethiopia to decide.

He refused to reveal where the 82 year-old former Emperor was being held, because of what he termed "security reasons." Nor would he give the precise number of former Government ministers currently held in detention at the headquarters of the Army's Fourth Division in the centre of the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

It is believed that about 170 ministers, landowners, officials, governors, and judges, are being held, pending the outcome of an investigation by a 15-man commission into allegations of corruption and maladministration.
