  • Description

Syrian forces captured the strategic mountain town of Hammana east of Beirut on Wednesday (29 September) and reduced Palestinian commandos and leftist forces in the Christian heartland to isolated pockets.

SYNOPSIS: The mountain incentive was a slick military operation lasting two days. Syrian tanks and armour bombarded Palestinian positions. There was some resistance but the Palestinians, outnumbered and outgunned, quickly abandoned their mountain outpost.

The Syrians have made a point of minimising their role in Lebanon after severe criticism from the leftists and other Arab countries. They prefer troops like the vanguard, the small right-wing army. The vanguards are a mixed force of Christian and Moslems who until they joined the Syrian offensive stayed out of the war. There are only 600 vanguard soldiers. Syrian has 20,000 men in Lebanon.

These badly damaged Syrian armoured personnel carriers show the offensive is being fought with Syrian bullets and paid for with Syrian blood. The plan now is for Christian forces and Syrian troops to surround leftist mountain positions and clear the Damascus to Beirut highway. The first part of the plan has gone smoothly. Vanguards and Syrians have encountered little resistance in the first days of the mountain offensive. But the are sure the Palestinians and leftists will show strong military opposition in the future. The Syrian offensive was launched five days after Mr. Elias Sarkis was sworn in as Lebanese President.
