  • Description

THE PRESIDENT OF IRAQ, ABDUL RAHMAN ARIF, YESTERDAY (MONDAY) CALLED ON ARAB STATES TO CO-ORDINATE THEIR OIL POLICIES TO PROTECT OIL RESOURCES IN THE ARAB WORLD FROM FOREIGN POLITICAL INFLUENCE.

PRESIDENT ARIF WAS FORMALLY OPENING THE SIXTH ARAB PETROLEUM CONGRESS IN BAGHDAD. THE CONFERENCE IS BEING SPONSORED BY THE ARAB LEAGUE.

THE CONFERENCE IS BEING ATTENDED BY 500 DELEGATES AND OBSERVERS FROM ARAB NATIONS, PETROLEUM EXPORTERS, INTERNATIONAL OIL COMPANIES AND OIL PRODUCING NATIONS.

THE AIM OF THE CONFERENCE IS TO SPREAD INFORMATION ON OIL AND ITS IMPORTANCE AS A SOURCE OF INCOME. ARAB NATIONS PRODUCE A QUARTER OF THE WORLD'S OIL - OR 450-MILLION TONS A YEAR.

THE CHAIRMAN OF THE CONFERENCE, THE IRAQI PRIME MINISTER, NAJI TALEB, WHO IS ALSO HIS COUNTRY'S ACTING MINISTER OF OIL, TOLD THE CONFERENCE THAT THE RECENT IRAQI OIL CRISIS - CAUSED BY A DISPUTE OVER TRANSIT ROYALTIES BETWEEN SYRIA AND THE IRAQI PETROLEUM COMPANY - HAD BEEN A GRAVE CRISIS. THE DISPUTE ENDED LAST WEEK, AND OIL IS NOW FLOWING FROM IRAQ ACROSS SYRIA FOR THE FIRST TIME IN NEARLY THREE MONTHS.

THE CONGRESS ON OIL IS SCHEDULED TO LAST ONE WEEK.
