  • Description

Britain's Joe Bugner retained his European heavyweight boxing title in Bologna, Italy, on Saturday (1 March) by beating the Italian Dante Cane in a furious and bloody contest.

The fight, at the Palazzo Dello Sport, was stopped by a doctor at the end of the fourth round after he examined a massive gash above the Italian's left eye.

After the fight, Bugner said, in an exclusive interview with Visnews, that the cut was inflicted by a short right hook in the second round. But Cane and his supporters claimed it was caused by a head butt.

Cane's tactic of charging at his opponent, and Bugner's prodigious counter-punching turned the contest into a brawling affair.

From the second round, when Cane's eye was opened, both fighters were splashed with blood. There were many clashes of heads causing the referee to intervene. And, on one occasion, Cane, angered by his injury, almost barged his opponent out of the ring.

When the fight was stopped, coins and rubbish were hurled onto the ring by disappointed spectators.
