Background: At a news conference in Beirut, Lebanon, an Eritroan province of Eritrea, now a scene of heavy fighting between Ethiopian troops and secessionist rebels.

Mr Mohammed Said Idries, member of the Front's Foreign Relations Committee, said the outcome of the fight for Eritrean liberation was still in doubt, but added that both Saudi Arabia and Kuwait supported the independence of Eritrea. The two countries had offered Ethiopia financial aid provided that it granted Eritrea its independence, he said.

    M. Said Idries also expressed satisfaction at Sudan's attitude, saying it permitted the flow of arms across its territory to the Eritrean guerrillas. He added that Ethiopian forces were fighting with American equipment, but the American base in Eritrea was not interfering.
