Background: AUSTRALIA DOMINATED SWIMMING EVENTS AT THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES IN PERTH YESTERDAY (SATURDAY), CLINCHING TWO GOLD MEDALS - BOTH IN WORLD RECORD TIME. A BIG CROWD, INCLUDING PRINCE PHILIP AND AUSTRALIA'S PRIME MINISTER, MR. MENZIES, PACKED PERRY LAKES STADIUM TO SEE THE AUSSIE SWIMMERS SPLASH TO VICTORY IN THE WOMEN'S 440 YARDS FREESTYLE RELAY AND IN THE MEN'S 880 YARDS FREESTYLE RELAY.

THE AUSTRALIAN GIRL'S TEAM -- DAWN FRASER, LYNETTE BELL, RUTH EVERUSS, AND ROBIN THORN -- WON EASILY FROM CANADA, WITH ENGLAND THIRD, AND RHODESIA FOURTH. THEIR TIME - 4 MINS. 11.1 SEC -- WAS 2.7 SEC BETTER THAN THE WORLD RECORD SET BY THE SAME QUARTET IN MELBOURNE LAST MONTH.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE RACE WAS DAWN FRASER'S FLASHING PERFORMANCE AS AUSTRALIA'S LAST-LEG SWIMMER. HER TIME WAS 6/10TH SEC FASTER THAN HER WORLD RECORD TIME, BUT WAS NOT ALLOWED BECAUSE SHE SWAM THE LAST LEG FROM A FLYING START.

IN THE MEN'S 880 YARDS FREESTYLE RELAY, THE AUSTRALIAN TEAM OF MURRAY ROSE, ALAN WOOD, TONY STRAHAN AND ROBERT WINDLE WON IN 8 MINS. 13.5 SEC, CLIPPING 3.1 SEC OFF THE PREVIOUS RECORD. THEY LED ALL THE WAY TO SCORE EASILY FROM CANADA (8: 42.4) WITH ENGLAND (8: 46.0) THIRD.

EARLIER, DAWN FRASER CHALKED UP A NEW GAMES RECORD IN THE FIRST HEAT OF THE WOMEN'S 110 YARDS FREESTYLE EVENT, REGISTERING 60.7 SEC. THIS WAS POINT-7 SEC BETTER THAN HER OWN RECORD SET UP IN 1958, BUT IT WAS STILL POINT-8 OUTSIDE HER WORLD TIME MADE THIS YEAR. MISS FRASER WON IN EFFORTLESS STYLE FROM CANADA'S MARY STEWART (63.6) WITH FELLOW CANADIAN B. THOMPSON THIRD.

NEW ZEALAND'S DOT COLEMAN SCORED HER COUNTRY'S FIRST GOLD MEDAL OF THE GAMES WHEN SHE WON THE WOMEN'S INDIVIDUAL FOILS IN THE FENCING. SHE CLINCHED HER VICTORY BY BEATING GILLIAN SHEEN OF ENGLAND.

MEANWHILE, TRACK EVENTS AT THE GAMES STADIUM WERE BEING CONTESTED IN FIERCE, CENTURY-PLUS HEAT. IN THE EIGHTH HEAT OF THE MEN'S 100 YARDS DASH, E. ROBERTS OF TRINIDAD-TOBAGO, FLASHED HOME IN 9.6 SEC. SECOND WAS ENGLAND'S PETER RADFORD (9.7), RHODESIA'S J. I. SMITH (9.9) THIRD, AND J. ODONGO, UGANDA, (9.9) FOURTH.
