Background: INTRODUCTION A very important match in the World Cup soccer Group Four took place on Saturday when Belgium met Holland. The Dutch could not afford to lose the match if they hoped to reach the finals of the Cup in Argentina next year. The win put them top for their group.
SYNOPSIS: Belgium - playing from right to left - went into the attack from the start but couldn't manage to finish off their moves.
The Dutch were the beaten finalists in the 1974 World Cup and started among the favourites for 1978. They opened their campaign with a 1-0 win in Iceland last September. But a month later they were surprisingly held at home to a 2-2 draw by Northern Ireland. But any hopes that the Belgium crowd may have had that the Dutch would be overrun disappeared when Johnny Rep put Holland ahead 1-0.
The Belgian manager, Guy Thys, packed his side with attacking players to try and breach the strong Dutch defences. For his own team's defence, Thys brought in two players from FC Bruges - Alfons Bastijns and Joseph Volders. Both are fames for their forays up front but are equally good in their defensive role.
The score was still 1-0 to Holland by half-time. And it was the Dutch who returned to the attack in the second half. This attack failed but in the 65th minute Holland's star player Johann Cruyff put the match beyond Belgium's reach. The final score - Belgium nil, Holland two.
