  • Description

Algerian President Houari Boumedianne claimed on tuesday (Sept. 3) that there was a "real risk" of United States military intervention in the Middle East in reaction to the takeover of American oil companies. Speculation as to widespread takeovers followed the Libyan action in expropriating 51 per cent of all major oil interests there.

To support his contention, President Boumedienne cited recent large-scale desert manoeuvres by a U.S. Marine Corps division in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. He said the manoeuvres were "politic-psychological preparation" for such intervention.

United States reaction to suggestions of further nationalisations of America oil company interests by arab nations has been extremely restrained. After the Libyan takeover, a State Department spokesman commented that the U.S. deeply regretted the action. There has been speculation that the U.S. might try to organise a boycott of Libyan oil.

So far there has been no other report supporting President Boumedienne's contention.
