  • Description

TROOPS OF THE ARGYLL AND SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS MADE A SYSTEMATIC SEARCH IN A WIDE AREA OF CRATER ON TUESDAY FOR MINES AND WEAPONS.

CRATER HAS BEEN THE SCENE OF SOME OF THE WORST TROUBLE IN ADEN. THE ARGYLL AND SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS RE-OCCUPIED THE TOWN EARLY IN JULY AFTER THE BRITISH FORCE THERE WAS ATTACKED AND SUFFERED HEAVY CASUALTIES.

ONE HUNDRED SOLDIERS TOOK PART IN THE SEARCH. THEY WERE EQUIPPED WITH MINE DETECTORS, PICKS, SHOVELS AND AXES, AND ALL WERE HEAVILY ARMED.

THE SEARCH BEGAN AT THE CRATER FODDER MARKET WHERE FIVE DAYS AGO A MINE WAS IGNITED IN AN ATTEMPT TO DESTROY PATROLLING BRITISH MILITARY VEHICLES.

THE BRITISH TROOPS THEN CONCENTRATED THEIR SEARCH IN HOUSES, ON WASTE GROUND AND IN ABANDONED CARS, PROVIDED BY A HELICOPTER, AND TROOPS WERE STATIONED ON ROOFTOPS TO PREVENT ATTACKS BY SNIPERS. THE TROOPS MAKING THE SEARCH ARE MORE USUALLY OCCUPIED ON GUARD DUTIES AND IN THE BATTALION'S PIPE BAND.
