    ABOUT 1,500 LEFT-WING JAPANESE STUDENTS SUPPORTED BY FEW HUNDRED RAILWAY WORKERS, CLASHED YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) WITH RIOT POLICE OUTSIDE THE TACHIKAWA U.S. AIR FORCE BASE NEAR TOKYO, THE STUDENTS WERE PROTESTING AGAINST UNITED STATES POLICY IN VIETNAM, WHILE THE WORKERS OPPOSE A PLANNED REDUCTION OF THE JAPANESE RAILWAYS' LABOUR FORCE.

    POLICE SAID THAT NEARLY 200 STUDENTS WERE ARRESTED. MANY OF THE STUDENTS TRIED TO PENETRATE THE BASE BUT WERE BEATEN OFF BY THE POLICE. FIERCE FIGHTING TOOK PLACE NEAR THE GATE BEFORE THE STUDENTS RETREATED TO THE TACHIKAWA RAILWAY STATION.

    SEVERAL HUNDRED DEMONSTRATORS JOINED THE STUDENTS IN ANOTHER CLASH WITH POLICE NEAR THE STATION. IT IS UNDERSTOOD THAT FURTHER DEMONSTRATIONS WILL TAKE PLACE TO TRY TO PREVENT THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT FROM RENEWING THE JAPAN-U.S. FRIENDSHIP TREATY IN 1970.
