Background: Indian Muslims congregated at the historic Moghul Gate Delhi, July 5..to parade to the accompaniment of drums in observance of "Muharram", marking the end of the ten-day period of mourning to commemorate the martyrdom of Iman (Prohet) Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Mohammed.
Hussein, according to belief, was invited to go Mecca to re-occupy this throne and treacherously murdered there. In remembrance of Hussein, the Muslim processionists carried elaborately decorated (Tazias" with domes that resembled famous mosques, replicas of Imam Hussein's tomb.
Traveling through Delhi, the procession wended its way to the martyrs' ground where the mourners subjected themselves to punishment by beating on their chest and body. This is done to inflict pain and thus achieve some sort of communion with their religious leader Hussein murdered by his own relatives. (These scenes are not allowed to be filmed.
