  • Description

SOME OF SOUTH AFRICA'S RICHEST GRAZING LAND, IN THE TRANSVAAL NEAR JOHANNESBURG, HAS BEEN DEVASTATED BY A DROUGHT THAT HAS LASTED FOR ALMOST FIVE YEARS. FARMERS HAVE STARTED A MASSIVE CATTLE DRIVE IN AN ATTEMPT TO GET WHAT REMAINS OF THEIR HERDS TO AREAS WHERE THERE IS MORE RAIN AND FODDER.

A SPOKESMAN FOR THE TRANSVAAL AGRICULTURAL UNION SAID THAT THE ONLY HOPE OF SAVING THE SURVIVING ANIMALS LAY IN MOVING THEM TO BETTER LAND, AND MORE THAN 10,000 HEAD OF CATTLE WILL BE MOVED BY ROAD AND RAIL. FARMERS SAY THAT RAIN NOW WOULD BE TOO LATE TO REVIVE ARID GRAZING LAND, AND MANY HAVE ALREADY ABANDONED THEIR FARMS TO SEEK WORK IN THE TOWNS.
