Background: River Plates defeat by Uruguay's Penarol on October 28 virtually ended the Argentine team's chances to win the Libertadores soccer cup. Uruguayan fans who travelled to Buenos Aires almost outnumbered the home fans in the 30,000-strong crowd. Down 2-1 at half-time, River Plate playing in the diagonal red stripe on white shirts trailed throughout, while Penarol (in yellow and black shirts) were quick to take advantage of their opponents' weak defence. After eleven minutes of play, Penarol's defender Olivera was left unmarked to head in his side's first goal. Although Chaparro equalised four minutes later, the River defence was soon at fault again, with Saporiti letting through Silva, who was apparently brought down by goalkeeper Puentedura. A penalty converted by Morena gave Penarol their second goal at the 28th minute. River Plate's efforts after the interval did not seriously threaten a better organized opponent, although Nieto's free-kick did reduce the home team's arrears after Vargas had made it 3-1 for the visitors. While River Plate tried hard to equalise, Morena's second goal secured a 4-2 victory for penarol nine minutes before the end of the match.
