    THE NINTH ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF ARTS IN UGANDA WAS OPENED ON TUESDAY (20 JANUARY) BY MR. WILLIAM OFORI-ATTA, THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION, SPORTS AND CULTURE, AT THE NATIONAL CULTURAL CENTRE IN KUMASI.

    A LARGE NUMBER OF OFFICIALS AND CELEBRITIES ATTENDED THE OPENING CEREMONIES INCLUDING DR. EVANS ANFOM, VICE CHANCELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN KUMASI; MR. OHENEBA KOW RICHARDSON, THE ASHANTI REGION CHIEF EXECUTIVE, AND DR. OKU AMPOFO, CHAIRMAN OF THE FUNCTION.

    MR OFORI-ATTA SAID THAT THE GOVERNMENT BELIEVED THAT IF THE NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT WAS TO BE A BALANCED ONE, ECONOMIC PROGRESS MUST GO HAND IN HAND WITH SOCIAL AND CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT.

    HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT THE GOVERNMENT GAVE A HIGH PLACE TO THE NATION'S ART AND CULTURE FOR IT BELIEVED THAT THEY DO NOT ONLY SATISFY THE BASIC HUMAN NEED FOR CREATIVE EXPRESSION, BUT THEY ALSO PLAYED A VITAL ROLE IN NATION BUILDING AND NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

    IN WELCOMING THE PARTICIPANTS AND GUESTS TO THE FESTIVAL DR. DSANE-SELBY, CHAIRMAN OF THE FESTIVAL COMMITTEE, SAID THE QUALITY OF THE FESTIVAL CONTINUES TO IMPROVE.
