  • Description

INTRODUCTION: Several collections of early Chinese ceramics and bronzes were brought to Europe in the 1920s and 'thirties, but few of them are still in tact. On Tuesday (29 March), the individual pieces of yet another collection came under the auctioneer's hammer in England when the Sir Neill Malcolm treasures went on sale. His interest in Chinese art developed during a visit there in 1896, and over the next 40 years he formed a collection of pieces that has been admired throughout the world.

SYNOPSIS: One of the first to come up for sale at Sotheby's the London auctioneers, was a very rare Honan ribbed black glazed jar. The vessel was only 11 inches high (279 mm) and 10 inches (254 mm) wide.

The highest price at the auction was fetched by a bronze food vessel almost 2,000 years old. It was thought to have been found in 1931, and originally formed one of a set of 12 similar vessels.
