Background: INTRODUCTION: President Jayawardene of Sri Lanka has called in the armed forces to help police maintain law and other following a series of violent incidents between the Sinhalese and Tamil communities. The government now reports that calm has been restored.

SYNOPSIS: Troops are patrolling the streets of Sri Lanka's capital, Colombo, and other parts of the country which has been torn by inter-communal strife.

The president decided to bring in troops after two men were killed and several cases of rioting and arson were reported.

He ordered that they should have special powers of arrest and search, and could use firearms if necessary.

The police say the latest outbreak of violence began with terrorist attacks in the north by extremist members of the Tamil community who are campaigning for a separate state. President Jayawardene has met the secretary of the Tamil's organisation, Mr. Amirthalingam, to discuss the problem.

Officials say that law and order are now being restored although there are isolated incidents. In one, two workers were dragged from a bus and set on fire. One man died and the other was seriously injured.
