    Regional experts on education met in Nairobi, Kenya on Monday (December 11) for a five-day conference to discuss cooperation between educational institutions and industry.

    Delegates to the conference -- sponsored by the UNESCO Field Science Office for Africa -- included senior engineering educators and representatives of African engineering institutions from Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Zaire and Zambia.

    Among the specific problems relating to Africa were ownership patterns of industry, the small scale of industry and the shortages of qualified engineering personnel in both education and industry.

    SYNOPSIS: In Nairobi, a five-day conference sponsored by UNESCO gets under way to discuss way of improving cooperation between educations and industry. The delegates, who included senior engineering teachers and representatives of African engineering institutions, came from virtually every part of the continent.

    Dr. Olu Ibukun of Kenya, welcomed the delegates to the conference, which will also discuss the role of governments and professional societies in promoting cooperation between education and industry.

    Delegates will discuss student training in industry, industrial sponsorship of students and problems resulting from the small scale of industry in Africa and the shortages of qualified engineering personnel in both education and industry.
