    SOME 1,200 STUDENTS OF ORIENTAL HISTORY ARE MEETING IN NEW DELHI. THEY ARE DELEGATES FROM 55 COUNTRIES ATTENDING THE 26TH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF ORIENTALISTS. THE MEETING, WHICH OPENED YESTERDAY (SATURDAY), CONTINUES FOR A WEEK.

    IT IS THE FIRST SINCE THE SERIES BEGAN IN 1874 - BE HELD AMID ONE OF THE CIVILISATIONS ITS MEMBERS STUDY. A GUEST WAS THE INDIAN PRIME MINISTER, MR NEHRU.

    THE CONGRESS WAS FORMED IN 1873 BY A FRENCH PROFESSOR TO LOOK INTO "THE HISTORY AND ANTIQUITIES, ARTS, SCIENCES AND LITERATURES OF ASIA." ALTHOUGH MANY OF THE PAPERS TO BE DELIVERED AT THE CONGRESS HAVE AN ORIENTAL FLAVOUR, OTHERS TAKE UP THE ISSUE OF WORLD POLITICS.

    YESTERDAY'S THREE OPENING PAPERS CALLED ON DELEGATES TO WORK FOR "THE DEVELOPMENT OF A WORLD COMMUNITY, BASED ON UNITY AND HARMONY AS DISTINCT FROM UNANIMITY AND UNIFORMITY."
    APART FROM 600 INDIANS, OTHER COUNTRIES REPRESENTED IN BULK ARE: UNITED STATES, 120; WEST GERMANY, 50; SOVIET UNION, 43; BRITAIN, 42; FRANCE, 32.
