  • Description

EIGHT PEOPLE WERE INJURED AND MORE THAN SIXTY ARRESTED IN RIOTS AT SEASIDE, OREGON, LAST SATURDAY DURING AMERICA'S LABOR DAY WEEK-END. MOST OF THE RIOTERS WERE HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE STUDENTS APPARENTLY OUT TO MARK THE THREE-DAY HOLIDAY IN THEIR OWN WAY.

POLICE AND FIREMEN TURNED OUT TO DEAL WITH A CROWD OF ABOUT 500 WHO SMASHED WINDOWS, TORE DOWN SIGNBOARDS AND SLASHED FIRE HOSES. WHEN THE RIOTERS THREATENED TO STORM A PRISON WHERE YOUNG OFFENDERS WERE BEING HELD, NATIONAL GUARDSMEN WERE ORDERED TO THE AREA.

(CROWDS OF YOUNG PEOPLE GATHERED AGAIN ON SUNDAY. THIS TIME THEY WERE DISTRACTED BY A ROCK-AND-ROLL BAND PLAYING ON A NEARBY ROOF-TOP. THEY SPENT THEIR ENERGY DANCING AND DISPERSED WHEN THE BAND STOPPED PLAYING.

OTHER RIOTS DURING LABOR DAY WHEN-END OCCURRED IN TWO CITIES ON THE ATLANTIC COAST.)
