  • Description

NEXT SATURDAY SOME 43 INTREPID MEN FROM SEVERAL COUNTRIES WILL SET OUT FROM PLYMOUTH, ON ENGLAND'S SOUTH WEST COAST, IN AN ARRAY OF TINY YACHTS TO SAIL IN A SINGLE-HANDED RACE ACROSS THE ATLANTIC TO NEW YORK. THE RACE IS SPONSORED BY THE "OBSERVER" A LONDON SUNDAY NEWSPAPER.

DREAMED UP BY THE "OBSERVER" STAFF NEARLY 10 YEARS AGO, THE FIRST TRANS-ATLANTIC SINGLE-HANDED RACE IN 1960 WAS WON BY FRANCIS CHICHESTER, LONG BEFORE HIS GREAT CIRCUMNAVIGATION OF THE WORLD. THE NEXT WAS IN 1964, WHEN IT WAS WON BY A FRENCHMAN, ERIC TABALRY.

THE FIRST RACE WAS WON IN 40 DAYS, AND THE NEXT IN 27 DAYS. THIS YEAR AN EVEN FASTER TIME IS EXPECTED. SOME OF THE YACHTS ARE BY NO MEANS SMALL, AND NORMALLY WOULD HAVE A CREW OF EIGHT OR NINE PEOPLE -- PRESENTING AND EQUALLY LARGE PROBLEM TO THE MEN WHO PLAN TO SAIL THEM SINGLE-HANDED.

AMONG THE SINGLE-HANDED SAILORS WILL BE FRAULEIN BAUMANN, THE ONLY WOMAN COMPETITOR. OF THE YACHTS SEEN IN THIS FILM "YAKSHA" AND "GOLDEN COCKEREL" ARE ESTIMATED TO HAVE THE BEST CHANCES, THOUGH NEITHER OF THEM ARE AMONG THE FAVOURITES. LONDON BOOKMAKERS, GIVE THEM BOTH A 10 TO ONE CHANCE. "MAGUELONNE" AND "KOALA 111" -- ALSO IN THIS FILM -- HAVE BEEN GIVEN ODDS OF 100 TO ONE AGAINST THEIR WINNING.

SYNOPSIS: WHEN THE FAMOUS SIR FRANCIS DRAKE'S "GOLDEN HIND" SET OUT ON FORAYS OUT OF PLYMOUTH, ON ENGLAND'S SOUTH WEST COAST; SOME FOUR-HUNDRED YEARS AGO, IT'S UNLIKELY THAT THERE WERE BOOKMAKERS TO TAKE BETS ON HIS SUCCESS. BUT LONDON BOOKMAKERS ARE TAKING BETS ON THE SUCCESS OF THESE YACHTS. NEXT SATURDAY, THEIR OWNERS WILL SINGLE-HANDED SAIL THE YACHTS OUT OF PLYMOUTH ON A RACE ACROSS THE ATLANTIC.

DREAMED UP BY NEWSPAPER STAFF TEN YEARS AGO, THE FIRST TRANS-ATLANTIC SINGLE-HANDED YACHT RACE IN 1960 WAS WON BY FRANCIS CHICHESTER, LONG BEFORE HIS GREAT SOLO CIRCUMNAVIGATION OF THE WORLD. AMONG THE FORTY-ONE ENTRANTS THIS YEAR IS A WOMAN, FRAULEIN BAUMANN.

THE FIRST RACE IN 1960 WAS WON IN FORTY DAYS. THE SECOND, IN 1964, WHEN THE WINNER WAS A FRENCHMAN, ERIC TABALRY, TOOK TWENTY-SEVEN DAYS. THIS YEAR, EVEN FASTER TIMES ARE EXPECTED. SOME OF THE YACHTS ARE BIG ENOUGH TO HAVE A CREW OF EIGHT OR NINE, UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES -- PRESENTING AN EQUALLY BIG PROBLEM TO THOSE WHO PLAN TO SAIL THEM SINGLE-HANDED.
