    IN THE BRITISH GENERAL ELECTION, THE LABOUR PARTY MADE EARLY GAINS AT THE EXPENSE OF THE MAIN OPPOSITION CONSERVATIVE PARTY WHEN COUNTING BEGAN AFTER THE CLOSE OF THE POLLING STATIONS TONIGHT (THURSDAY). WITH NEARLY HALF THE VOTES COUNTED IT WAS ESTIMATED THAT THE SWING THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY TOWARDS THE LABOUR PARTY WAS BETWEEN 3 AND 4 PER CENT, AND THAT MR. WILSON'S PARTY COULD EXPECT A PARLIAMENTARY MAJORITY OVER ALL OTHER PARTIES OF A LITTLE OVER 100 SEATS.

    AS USUAL AT ELECTION TIME LARGE CROWDS GATHERED IN LONDON'S TRAFALGAR SQUARE - WHERE A HUGE TELEVISION SCREEN HAD BEEN SET UP. THE WAS THE USUAL GROUP OF YOUNG PEOPLE WHO DECIDED THE OCCASION WAS WORTHY OF A DIP IN ONE OF THE FOUNTAINS AT THIS FAMOUS SQUARE.

    THE FIRST RESULT TO BE ANNOUNCED WHICH WENT AGAINST THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY WAS THE ONE FROM EXETER.

    THE LABOUR PARTY WON BACK FROM THE CONSERVATIVES THE CONTROVERSIAL SEAT AT SMETHWICK - LOST IN 1964 ELECTION BY MR. PATRICK GORDON-WALKER. THE CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATE WAS MR. PETER GRIFFITHS - THE MAN WHO WAS THE SUBJECT OF A "PARLIAMENTARY LEPER" TAUNT BY MR. HAROLD WILSON SOON AFTER THE LAST ELECTION. THE WINNER OF THE SEAT THIS YEAR IS MR. ANDREW FAULDS WHO IS STRONGLY AGAINST IMMIGRATION CONTROLS ON A RACIAL BASIS. THE LARGE INDIAN IMMIGRANT GROUP IS SMETHWICK PLEDGED ITS FULL SUPPORT TO MR. FAULDS IN THIS CONTEST.

    THE RESULT WAS ANNOUNCED EARLY IN THE EVENING:
    MR. GORDON-WALKER HIMSELF WON THE EAST LONDON CONSTITUENCY OF LEYTON, WHERE HE WAS DEFEATED IN SENSATIONAL BY-ELECTION IN JANUARY 1965:
