  • Description

More than one thousand students, demanding restoration of democracy and an end to campus intervention, battled riot police in Seoul on Wednesday (30 October) as they attempted to march out of a prestigious private university.

Five students were reported injured when police sprayed tear-gas at the rock-throwing demonstrators at Yonsei University, where students held a rally calling for the release of imprisoned students and an end to alleged surveillance by intelligence agents.

SYNOPSIS: Campus protests in South Korea against the Government of President Park are becoming more frequent and more violent. This could be embarrassing now for President Park because of his scheduled summit meeting with President Ford in three weeks. More than one thousand students massed at Seoul's Yonsei University on Wednesday to demand the restoration of democracy, freedom of the press and the release of student prisoners.

South Korean students for the first time have been calling for President Park's resignation. The students reportedly believe that the Government will remain lenient towards them, at least until President Ford's visit is over.
