  • Description

THE SULTANATE OF BRUNEI, A BRITISH PROTECTORATE IN NORTH BORNEO, WAS VISITED RECENTLY BY THE BRITISH COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF FAR EAST LAND FORCES, GENERAL SIR NIGEL POETT, AND OUR CAMERAMAN WAS GIVEN AN OPPORTUNITY TO RECORD SOME OF THE COLOUR, TRANQUILITY, AN INDUSTRY OF THIS LITTLE KNOWN LAND.

AT BRUNEI, SIR NIGEL WAS RECEIVED BY THE BRITISH RESIDENT, MR. D. C. WHITE, AND BOTH MEN DROVE TO THE SULTAN'S PALACE, WHERE THEY PAID THEIR RESPECTS TO HIS HIGHNESS SIR OMAR ALI SAIFUDDIN WASA'DUL KHAIRI WADDIN, THE 29TH SULTAN.

AFTERWARDS, MR. WHITE ESCORTED SIR NIGEL ON A TOUR OF BRUNEI, CAPITAL CITY OF THE SULTANATE, AND THE SURROUNDING DISTRICT. FIRST THEY VISITED THE ISLAMIC MOSQUE - MOST OF THE 81,000 POPULATION ARE MOHAMMEDANS - THEN TOURED THE MARKET AREAS WHERE CRAFTSMEN CARRY OUT THEIR CENTURIES OLD TRADES. IN A BOAT, THEY PASSED MANY VILLAGES ALONG THE RIVER BRUNEI. SOME HOUSES ARE BUILT OUT OVER THE RIVER ON PALM-TREE SUPPORTS.

RUBBER AND OIL ARE BRUNEI'S TWO MAIN INDUSTRIES. THE OIL AT SERIA WAS DISCOVERED IN 1929, AND THE WELLS ARE PRODUCING ENOUGH TO KEEP THREE-QUARTERS OF BRUNEI'S WORKING POPULATION EMPLOYED. IT ALSO MAKES BRUNEI'S ECONOMY ONE OF THE MOST STABLE IN THE REGION.
