General Giap received substantial Soviet military aid while Commander-in-Chief of the North Vietnamese forces during the Vietnam war and last visited Moscow in January, 1976, when he met Marshall Ustinov's predecessor, Andrei Grechko.

General Giap, aged 65, masterminded the defeat of the French in Indochina and then challenged and eventually triumphed over the United States' massive was machine. Known as the "Volcano Under the Snow" by his own countrymen the Vietnamese Defence Minister is regarded as one of the world's great military strategists.

After their arrival in Moscow, the Vietnamese delegation laid wreaths at the Lenin tomb and grave of the Unknown soldier. Later General Giap and Marshall Ustinov met for talks -- maintaining the close military co-operation which has existed both during and after the long Vietnam war. When United States troops withdrew from Vietnam in 1975 it was something of a personal triumph for General Giap.
