    PROSPECTS FOR A PERMANENT PEACE BETWEEN INDIA AND PAKISTAN OVER KASHMIR HAVE GREATLY IMPROVED FOLLOWING TWO DAYS OF MINISTREAL TALKS WHICH ENDED IN RAWALPINDI, PAKISTAN, ON WEDNESDAY. ACCOMPANIED BY HIS DELEGATION, INDIA'S FOREIGN MINISTER, MR SARDAR SINGH, WAS MET AT RAWALPINDI'S CHAKLALA AIRPORT BY PAKISTAN'S FOREIGN MINISTER, MR ZULFIKAR ALI BHUTTO, WHEN HE ARRIVED ON TUESDAY.

    MR SINGH AND HIS 25-MAN DELEGATION ARRIVED IN A SPECIAL INDIAN AIR LINES PLANE. LATER, HE MADE A COURTESY CALL ON PRESIDENT AYUB KHAN OF PAKISTAN AND HAD A 35-MINUTE PRE-LUNCH MEETING WITH HIM. THE TALKS BETWEEN THE TWO FOREIGN MINISTERS WERE FOLLOWED BY A JOINT COMMUNIQUE PLEDGING BOTH COUNTRIES TO SEEK PEACE IN AN ISSUE WHICH HAS POISONED RELATIONS BETWEEN THEIR TWO COUNTRIES FOR 18 YEARS.

    BOTH SIDES AGREED TO MEET AT A LATER DATE, EXPECTED TO BE NEXT MONTH IN NEW DELHI.
