  • Description

INTRODUCTION President Omar Bongo of Gabon has said that his country views the recent events in Uganda as an internal matter - and therefore of no interest. The President, who takes over as Chairman of the Organisation of African Unity in June, said that all Black African countries were agreed that South Africa must be totally liberated. President Bongo has recently (12 March) attended the ninth anniversary celebrations of the ruling Gabonese Democratic Party.

SYNOPSIS: The five hours of celebrations began as President Bongo's motorcade arrived for the parade.

The President is Secretary-General of the Gabonese Democratic Party - and his first function was to present decorations to the members of his Government. Shortly before the celebrations started he arrived back from the Afro-Arab summit conference in Cairo.

The large crowd watched army troops march past President bongo and his wife on the reviewing stand.

Afterwards, the President said the celebrations had been successful and enjoyable.

Apart from the troops, women members of Gabon's police force also took part in the rally.

In the ten years since President Bongo came to power, Gabon's economy has grown steadily-and there has also been an increase in the strength of the Country's armed forces.

The military played an important part in the anniversary celebrations with scout cars, jeeps and anti-aircraft guns involved in the parade.
