  • Description

The United Nations General Assembly has called for the admission of Vietnam to the United Nations and recommended that the Security Council reconsider its rejection of the application.

SYNOPSIS: The Security Council rejection of vietnam's admission resulted from a United States veto, and US ambassador, Mr William Scranton indicated that if the council decided to meet again on the question there would again be a veto. Earlier, the permanent observer for Vietnam, Mr Dinh Ba Thi, accused the United States of indifference to the destruction caused in the Vietnam war and an arrogant refusal to permit Vietnamese membership of the United Nations.

Mr Thi was speaking in favour of the resolution sponsored by more than 70 members that the Security Council reconsider its decision. Answering US charges that Vietnam was withholding information about Americans missing in action, Mr Thi said lists had been submitted and the remains of some American war dead had been returned.

Mr Scranton outlined US objections to Vietnamese membership.

When the results of the voting were announced, the United States was the only country to vote against the resolution.
