Background: The United Kingdom's first "pure" horror museum created open its doors in London on Monday (4 August).

The London Dungeon is the brainchild of Mrs. Amelia Geddes. Her idea originated three years ago when she took her young son to the Tower of London, and declared it was not "bloody enough" and that it "lacked atmosphere".

With the help of two friends accountant Hugh Foster, and film set designer Pater Howitt (of man of 4 seconds, backett and Great Gatby fame), Mrs. Geddes produced what she claims is the world's first pure horror museum.

Described as a "new concept in entertainment and education for the whole family", the London Dungeon offers "atmosphere, sights and sounds of the gruesome and gory from the Dark Ages to the end of the Seventeenth Century".

Featured in the displays are the Druid sacrifice scene the crucifixion of St. George, the murder of Thomas A'Beckett and a scene from the house of London plague victims.
